You know the holiday - but do you really know what it means?

Cinco de Mayo (the 5th of May) is a national (but not Federal) holiday celebrated in Mexico and the United States. While often confused with Mexican Independence Day - which is celebrated on September 16 - Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Battle of Puebla of 1862. During this battle, French forces were sent by Napolean III to basically rout out the Mexican government and make Mexico a French colony. However, the smaller Mexican forces successfully beat the French and reclaimed their town, nation, and heritage.

It is a Chicano (Mexican American) holiday, and often ignored by most Mexican natives. Most see Cinco de Mayo as extremely overcommercialized. But it is heavily celebrated in Puebla, Mexico.
